St. Mary's (Minn.) Edges Anchormen, 9-8

Auburndale, Fla.--Senior second basemen Nate Vigeant (Coventry, RI) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk as the Rhode Island College baseball team fell vs. St. Mary's (Minn.), 9-8, at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex (Field 4) on Sunday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Mary's struck first in the top of the first inning when senior third basemen Will Matthews (Geneva, IL) doubled down the right field line and drove in two runs.

• The Anchormen pushed one run across in the bottom of the fourth inning on a senior third basemen Ray Zincone (West Warwick, RI) single to right center to pull RIC within two, 3-1.

• SMU senior designated hitter Justin Weinberg (Eagan, MN) hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth to extend the Cardinals lead to four, 5-1.

• Freshman first basemen John Willette (Johnston, RI) launched a two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth, his third of the season, to cut the Cardinals' lead down to two, 5-3.

• Senior catcher Nick Feola (North Providence, RI) hit a gap-shot triple to right center scoring Zincone from first, to make the score, 5-4, in the bottom of the sixth.

• SMU scored three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to build an 8-4 advantage.

• A senior shortstop Rommy Morel (Providence, RI) RBI single up the middle made the score, 8-5, in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore left fielder Joey Coro (North Providence, RI) crossed the plate on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to pull RIC within two again, 8-6.

• Junior right fielder Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) tied the score at eight apiece on a two-run gap shot to left center in the bottom of the eighth.

• St. Mary's scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth and slammed the door in the bottom of the frame to hand the Anchormen their first loss of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
• Zincone went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Willette went 2-for-5, knocking in a pair of runs and scoring twice. Senior center fielder Josh Silva (Seekonk, MA) went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk.  

• RIC freshman starter Terry Murray (Norfolk, MA) hurled seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, to go along with six strikeouts. Junior reliever Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, RI) took the loss (0-1).

• Matthews went 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI for the Cardinals. Senior reliever Tyler Stilp (Lindstrom, MN) picked up the win (1-0). Junior Kodey Kiel (Owatonna, MN) earned the save (2).

WHAT'S NEXT
• In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face North Park on Monday, March 9 (1:45 p.m.).
