Olivia Carpenito Nets Six Points in, 18-12, Loss at Curry

Milton, Mass.—Sophomore midfielder Olivia Carpenito (Wilmington, MA) had four goals and two assists for six points as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team lost, 18-12, in their season opener at Curry on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Colonels built a 2-1 lead over the first 6:25 of the first half. Junior attacker Madison McKenna (Cumberland, RI) and classmate midfielder Giana Ritchie (Cumberland, RI) each scored a pair of goals to stake the Anchorwomen to a 5-2 advantage with 17:58 left in the opening frame.

• The hosts scored three of the next four goals to go into the halftime break trailing by one, 6-5. RIC led in shots, 18-12, and ground balls, 11-6, over the first 30 minutes, while the Colonels led in draw controls, 9-3.

• Carpenito and McKenna each netted two goals as RIC built a 10-7 lead with 23:41 remaining in the second half.

• Curry mounted a comeback and scored the next three to tie the contest, 10-10, with just under 17 minutes left to play.

• A Ritchie goal tied the game, 12-12, with 13:42 left, but the Colonels ripped off six straight and held RIC off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

• Carpenito added a team-best four groundballs and 10 shots in the game. McKenna and Ritchie each had four goals. Ritchie led the squad with three draw controls.

• Curry senior midfielder Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, NH) posted a game-high six goals, eight points, 14 shots and eight draw controls. Junior midfielder Allie Wysocki (Agawam, MA) contributed seven goals.

• RIC freshman goalkeeper Shannon O'Connell (Narraganset, RI) had 10 saves in the loss (0-1).

• Curry sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, RI) had five saves in the win (1-2)

BY THE NUMBERS
• Curry led in shots, 39-26, paced by a 27-8 advantage in the second half. The Colonels also led in draw controls, 25-6.

• The Anchorwomen held a slight advantage in ground balls, 16-15.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Emerson on Monday, March 9 (6 p.m.).
