Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Nichols, 13-12

Providence, R.I.--Rhode Island College sophomore midfielder Giana Ritchie (Cumberland, RI) scored six goals and picked up three draw controls as the women's lacrosse team edged Nichols, 13-12, at Alumni Field on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Freshman midfielder Morgan Pero (White River Jct., VT) had one goal and one assist for two points to go along with a game-best nine draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Madison McKenna (Cumberland, RI) came off the bench to pick up two goals, one assist and three caused turnovers.

• Freshman midfielder Olivia Carpenito (Wilmington, MA) had two goals and four caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Angie Leonardo (East Providence, RI) finished with a goal, six ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

• Nichols senior attack Kirsten Sullivan (Arlington, MA) led the visitors with five goals and an assist for six points. Junior midfielder Danielle Kozloski (Pepperell, MA) finished with an assist and five controls. 

• RIC senior goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) earned the win (3-3) with nine saves. Nichols junior goalkeeper Emily Eagan (Hingham, MA) stopped 22 in a losing (0-7) effort. 

• Nichols jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first eight minutes of the game as junior attack Miranda Smith (Methuen, MA) scored twice and sophomore midfielder Lizz McKinnon (Quincy, MA) tallied.

• RIC scored four of the next five, highlighted by two each from Ritchie and McKenna, to lead by one, 5-4, with just over seven minutes left in the opening frame.

• A free position goal by Pero sent the hosts into halftime up by a goal, 6-5. RIC led in shots, 23-10 and ground balls, 19-14, over the opening 30.

• The visitors scored four of the next five goals to go up by two, 9-7, with just over 25 minutes left in the game. Sullivan and senior attack McKayla Pratte (Newington, CT) had two apiece during the run.

• RIC led, 12-10, with just under eight minutes remaining, but two Sullivan markers pulled the Bison even at the 7:05 mark. 

• Ritchie scored with 6:02 left and Smith's tying bid rang off the post with 23 seconds left as the Anchorwomen held on for the win.

• RIC led in shots (42-27), ground balls (29-25) and draw controls (17-10).

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Curry on Thursday, April 4 (4 p.m.).
