Noelle Simmons Receives Helen M. Murphy Award

Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College senior second baseman Noelle Simmons (Goffstown, N.H.) received the Helen M. Murphy Award at the college's annual Cap and Gown Day held in Roberts Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Simmons shares the award with senior Haley Oliver (Coventry, R.I.) from women's cross country and track and field.
 
The award is based not only on athletic prowess, but also values community and campus involvement and honors an outstanding Rhode Island College senior woman athlete.
 
She has played in 153 career games, starting 151 of them. Simmons has accumulated a.371 (190-for-512) batting average with 141 runs scored, 190 hits, 45 doubles, 32 triples, 10 home runs, 114 RBI and 19 stolen bases. She owns a .643 career slugging percentage, a .417 on-base percentage and a .969 fielding percentage.
 
Simmons is a two-time First Team All-Little East selection and was an LEC All-Rookie Team award recipient as a freshman.
 
Simmons is a marketing major.
 
ABOUT THE HELEN M. MURPHY AWARD
The Murphy Award was established in 1979 and sponsored by the faculty of the Henry Barnard School to honor an outstanding Rhode Island College senior woman athlete. The award is named for Helen M. Murphy, a graduate of Rhode Island College in 1939, who was a member of the faculty for 38 years and taught at the Henry Barnard School, beginning in 1941, until her retirement in 1979.
