RIC Earns First Little East Win of the Year in, 1-0, Decision vs. Eastern Connecticut

Providence, R.I.--Freshman forward Cody Granville (Wakefield, R.I.) scored his third goal of the season in the 88th minute as the Rhode Island College men's soccer team defeated Eastern Connecticut, 1-0, in Little East action played at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Rhode Island College 1, Eastern Connecticut 0
Rhode Island College (5-2-2, 1-1-1 LEC)
Plymouth State (2-3-1, 1-2 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Midway through the first half, graduate student forward Jonathan Oliveira (Providence, R.I.) looked poised to go in all alone on the Warrior's keeper after a long pass over the top, but he couldn't corral the bouncing ball and the opportunity passed.

• After 45 minutes of play, each team had just one corner kick and Eastern Connecticut held the lead in shots, 9-6.

• It was more of the same in the second half up until the 75th minute, when ECSU freshman midfielder Reid Dowling (East Lyme, Conn.) received a perfect cross and put it on goal from point blank range, but was thwarted by RIC junior goalkeeper Jake Reed (Cumberland, R.I.) to keep the game scoreless.

• Oliveira had another scoring chance in the 81st minute as his shot ran across the goal line, but never crossed it.

• As the match looked like it was heading for a draw, Oliveira took a breakout pass from freshman midfielder Donovan Battle (Hudson, Mass.), dribbled around multiple defenders and put up a magnificent crossing pass to Granville, who headed it into the goal for what proved to be the game-winning strike.

• Eastern Connecticut senior goalkeeper Dylan Pallanck (Willington, Conn.) tallied three saves in the loss (2-3).

• Reed put up five saves and recorded his first shutout of the season in the winning effort (3-1-2).

• The victory for the hosts snaps a four-game winless streak for the club.
