Four From RIC Qualify for NCGA National Championship

Gates Named Gymnast of the Year; Anchorwomen Post Program-Record Scores on Beam and Overall Team Score in Fourth Place Finish at NCGA East Region Championship

Collegeville, Pa.--Senior Kelsey Gates (Orangeville, Pa.) was named the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) East Region Gymnast of the Year and joined junior Olivia Keyes (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Tucker (Pompton Plains, N.J.) on the All-Region teams as Rhode Island College finished fourth (six teams) at the 2023 NCGA East Region Championship, hosted by Ursinus on Saturday afternoon.

• The Anchorwomen's team score of 188.950 is a new program record.

• By virtue of their performances, four RIC gymnasts have qualified for the NCGA National Championship in their respective events.
 
• Gates earned All-Region honors with a first place finish on floor and a first place tie in the all-around.
 
• Tucker finished third on beam to earn All-Region honors.
 
• Keyes earned All-Region honors with a fourth place tie on beam and a first place tie in the all-around.

• Gates and Keyes have qualified for the NCGA National Championship in the all-around, while Tucker and freshman Morgan Lunn (Rutland, Mass.) qualified on beam.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VAULT: Tucker had the best score for the Anchorwomen with a 9.625, which was seventh overall and just missed All-Region status.
Team Scores:
RIC: 47.300
 
BARS:  Keyes had the top RIC score on bars with a 9.475, good for a tie for eighth overall.
Team Scores:
RIC: 45.050
 
BEAM: Tucker notched a 9.800 on beam, the top Anchorwomen score, and third best on the day. Keyes tied for fourth with a score of 9.750.
Team Scores:
RIC: 48.475 (new program record)
 
FLOOR: Gates was the best overall gymnast on floor with a score of 9.875.
Team Scores:
RIC: 48.125
 
ALL-AROUND: Gates and Keyes, along with Ithaca's Cameryn Nichols, tied for first place with a combined score of 38.125.  

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, the four Rhode Island College gymnasts will compete at the 2023 NCGA National Championship, hosted by Winona State on Saturday, March 24.
