Early Score Sinks Anchorwomen at Castleton

Castleton, Vt.-Senior goalkeeper Maya Benedict (Tempe, Ariz.) made nine saves as the Rhode Island College women's soccer team was defeated by Castleton, 1-0, in Little East action on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Castleton got on the board right out of the gate when sophomore midfielder Alex Billings (Carver, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season in just the sixth minute. Senior midfielder Bella Varisco (Bangor, Maine) was credited with the assist on the play.
 
• The second half was a defensive battle, with neither side allowing a goal. Benedict made six saves in the half alone and Castleton held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
• Benedict had nine saves in the loss (0-5).
 
• Spartans senior goalkeeper Alex Benfatti (Gloversville, N.Y.) registered the shutout and made two saves in the win (3-5).
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, Sept. 28 (7 p.m.).
