Maddie Kross Leads Women's Lacrosse to First Win

New London, Conn.--Sophomore attacker Maddie Kross (Peach Tree, Ga.) scored a game-high five goals as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team defeated Mitchell, 12-9, for their first win on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC held the lead after the first quarter with a 4-2 advantage. Senior midfielder Natalie Kulacz (Cumberland, R.I.) netted two goals in the opening 15 minutes.
 
• The two squads matched goal totals in each of the next two quarters, which allowed RIC to have its first lead of the season going into the fourth quarter, 9-7.
 
• The visitors used goals in the fourth quarter from Kross and junior attacker Shannon O'Connell (Narragansett, R.I.) to seal the win.
 
•Kross finished with five goals and three ground balls.
 
• Kulacz had two goals, three assists, six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
 
• Senior midfielder Olivia Carpenito (Wilmington, Mass.) earned a hat trick with three goals. She also chipped in with two helpers and two ground balls.
 
• Mitchell sophomore midfielder Kathryn Barillaro (Clinton, Conn.) paced the hosts with four goals.
 
• RIC sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Brennan (Portsmouth, R.I.) earned her first collegiate win (1-1) with six saves.
 
• Mitchell sophomore Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) made seven stops and picked up her fifth loss (0-5).
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC led in shots (26-23). Mitchell led in draw controls (16-9) and ground balls (23-21).

• RIC played the entire game with 11 players.
 
 WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East play at home vs. UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, April 6 (1 p.m.).
