Pierce's Grand Slam Helps Anchormen Sweep Season Series From UMD

Providence, R.I.—Freshman catcher Lucas Pierce (Chepachet, R.I.) launched a grand slam as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 16-6, in Little East action played at Pontarelli Field on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC notched two runs in the second inning and UMD bounced right back with a run of its own in the top of the third inning.
 
• The Anchormen would proceed to plate nine runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by the Pierce grand slam and a two-run homer by sophomore second baseman Cal Parrillo (Greenville, R.I.). RIC led, 11-1.
 
• UMD would claw back, scoring two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, with junior catcher Zak Souza (Fall River, Mass.) doubling home two runs in the top of the fifth to make the game, 11-5.
 
• RIC would regain its 10-run lead in the sixth inning, by scoring three runs, two of which came off of a two-run shot by sophomore shortstop Izaiah Rivera (Pawtucket, R.I.).
 
• RIC senior reliever Colin Gauthier (Pawtucket, R.I.) picked up win number three (3-0) with a strong performance out of the pen.
 
• Corsairs' senior pitcher Chase Stafford (Somerset, Mass.) took the loss (0-4).
 
• Parrillo was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
 
• Pierce went 2-for-3 as well, driving in four with the grand slam.
 
• Rivera had two extra base hits (one triple and one home run) which plated three runners and he crossed the plate twice himself.
 
• The Anchormen hit three home runs and were hit by six pitches.
 
 WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Johnson & Wales on Thursday, April 28 (3:30 p.m.).
