Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College has named
Sarah Gunderson as an assistant softball coach.
"I would like to thank Head Coach
Mary Holt-Kelsch, Director of Athletics
Donald Tencher and Associate Athletic Director
Jo-Ann D'Alessandro for the great opportunity to be a part of the Rhode Island College softball program," Gunderson said. "I am excited to work, compete and achieve greatness with this team."
"Sarah Gunderson joining the staff is huge for the future of this program," Holt-Kelsch said. "She is passionate about the sport, eager to teach and has a competitive intensity that is infectious. I am beyond excited to have her on board and look forward to seeing all the greatness she will bring to the program. Sarah will be primarily working with our team pitching staff and outfielders, while assisting with other facets of the program."
Gunderson started her collegiate career at the University of Rhode Island, spending time on the pitcher's mound and in the outfield from 2016-2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her senior year was cut short, but was granted a fifth year of eligibility. Gunderson took advantage of the opportunity to continue her softball and academic career by attending Providence College, where she graduated with her master's in business administration.
During her career at URI, Gunderson was a four-year starter, Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, honored on the A10 All-Rookie Team in 2017 and was a two-time A10 Pitcher of the Week in 2020. She hurled a career total of 338 innings and graduating with her bachelor's degree in marketing.
As a Friar, Gunderson pitched a total of 40 innings and was awarded Big East Weekly Honor Roll accolades. She recorded 45 strikeouts for the season and spent time in the outfield when off the mound.
