HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC and Mitchell traded long scoring runs during the first half, with the Mariners getting the last laugh and headed into halftime with a three-point, 41-38, advantage.
• Both squads kept the game close and were tied at 81 with 3:28 left in the game. From there, Darby scored five straight points for the visitors, which included trading one-and-ones with Mitchell junior guard
Ahmani Browne (St. John's, Antigua).
• With RIC up by one, 86-85, Mitchell junior guard
Mikey Buscetto hit a tightly-contested three-point shot to give the hosts the lead.
• Browne and Buscetto would make clutch free throws down the stretch as RIC missed a few opportunities to tie the game or take the lead, which ultimately led to a Mariner win.
• Darby also pulled in six rebounds.
• RIC sophomore guard
Jordan Riley (Windsor, Conn.) had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
• Senior guard
Keyshaun Jacobs (Lynn, Mass.) scored 24 points and is now 45 points away from 1,000 points exclusively at RIC.
• Mitchell junior guards
Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) and
Jalen Benson (New London, Conn.) were the stars for the hosts. Stokes had 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Benson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
