Spartans Defeat Women's Soccer

Providence, R.I.—Junior forward Alexandra Amore (Saunderstown, R.I.) tallied the lone goal on the day as Rhode Island College fell, 7-1, vs. Castleton in Little East women's soccer action played at Alumni Field on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Senior forward Rylee Nichols (Clarendon, Vt.) scored herself a hat trick, pushing her season total to six goals, and contributed an assist for a seven-point afternoon for the Spartans.
 
• Castleton took the lead in the 12th minute when senior defender Krista Girroir (Southwick, Mass.) fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that deflected off a RIC defender and past freshman goalkeeper Reagan Kerecz (Tolland, Conn.).
 
• Nichols scored her first of the day, with what proved to be the eventual game-winner, on a strike in the 19th minute.
 
• Senior midfielder Julia Carone (Castleton, Vt.) scored just over a minute later to stake the Spartans to a 3-0 advantage.
 
• Junior defender Ashlee Meczywor (Adams, Mass.) put a ball in the back of the net with a missile from about 45 yards out on a free kick. That was her first career goal in 24 games.
 
• Castleton went into halftime holding a slight advantage in shots (8-7).
 
• RIC got on the board early in the second half when freshman midfielder Serena Forte (Hope, R.I.) broke free from the defense and crossed a pin-point pass to Amore, who then beat the keeper for her second goal on the year.
 
• Nichols completed the hat trick with markers in the 63rd and 71st minute. Junior forward Kaiden Gauthier (Bennington, Vt.) capped the day's offense with her third goal of the year in the 80th minute.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Castleton senior goalkeeper Alex Benfatti (Gloverstown, N.Y.) made five saves to earn her fourth (4-2-1) win of the year.
 
• Kerecz stopped five in the loss (1-8).
 
• Castleton had five separate goal scorers, and four different players registered an assist.
 
• Castleton pulled away in shots during the second half, holding a 12-4 advantage, to finish the day with a 20-11 effort in that department.
 
• Amore scored her second goal in as many games.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at home vs. UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, Sept. 29 (4 p.m.).
