RIC Opens Little East Play With Second Straight Shutout

Providence, R.I.—Senior forward Jonathan Oliveira (Providence, R.I.) registered a goal and an assist for three points as Rhode Island College defeated Western Connecticut, 3-0, in Little East men's soccer action played at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC junior forward Brandon Ramos (Boston, Mass.) scored on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box in the eighth minute for his first of the season.
 
• Senior defender Roman Davis (Watertown, Mass.) set up Oliveira for his team-leading third goal of the year in the 21st minute with a long breakaway pass.
 
• RIC took a 2-0 lead, while holding a 12-7 advantage in shots, into halftime.
 
• The visitors carried play for the majority of the final 45 minutes, outshooting the hosts, 14-3.  
 
• Oliveira and sophomore midfielder Larry Garcia (Central Falls, R.I.) set up sophomore forward Samuel Talavera (Providence, R.I.) for his first goal in the 48th minute with some one-touch passing inside the box to cap the day's scoring.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC senior goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.) made nine saves for his, and the team's, second consecutive shutout win (3-2).
 
• Western Connecticut senior goalkeeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss (6-2) with a two-save effort.
 
• Western Connecticut held the advantage in shots (21-15), while both squads were even in corner kick opportunities (4-4).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Dean on Wednesday, Sept. 22 (3:30 p.m.).
