Panthers Down Anchorwomen in Season-Opener

Providence, R.I.--Freshman midfielder Jayde Fernandes (Pawtucket, R.I.) registered four shots on goal as Rhode Island College fell to Plymouth State, 6-0, in Little East women's soccer action played at Alumni Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was played in a heavy downpour throughout the contest.
 
• PSU struck first in the 19th minute of action when freshman midfielder Ashley Plante (Concord, N.H.) fired a shot that beat RIC freshman goalkeeper Giannie Soto (Cranston, R.I.) for her first collegiate goal.
 
• The Panthers found the back of the net again off of a corner kick that was deflected to senior defender Jenna Parsons (Windham, N.H.) for the first of her three goals on the day in the 26th minute.
 
• Parsons found sophomore midfielder Emily Haik (Westerly, R.I.) with 16 seconds left in the half, who then snuck the ball by Soto to give the visitors a three-nil lead at the midway point.
 
• The second half seemed to be in favor of the Anchorwomen as they controlled the ball in the Panthers half of the field, but weren't unable to get one by PSU junior goalkeeper Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.).
 
• RIC outshot PSU in the second half by four, 10-6.

• PSU junior forward Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season in the 79th minute.
 
• Parson chipped in her second goal in the 87th minute and her third in the 89th minute as the Panthers won both club's season-opener.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC outshot PSU on the day, 14-13.
 
• Robbins made two saves in the first half to earn the win (1-0) for the Panthers. Freshman netminder Amaya Rogers (Waterbury, Vt.) played the second half and made six stops.
 
• PSU held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East action at home vs. Eastern Connecticut on Thursday, April 1 (4 p.m.).
