Last Minute Surge Leads RIC Past Fitchburg State, 81-77

Fitchburg, Mass.--Rhode Island College junior guard Shion Darby (Peekskill, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 42 points to lead the Anchormen past Fitchburg State, 81-77, at Parkinson Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC was down by three points, 77-74, with 36 seconds left. Darby converted a layup with 23 seconds remaining to pull the visitors within a point, 77-76.
 
• The Falcons missed two key free throws with 20 seconds left and Darby fed senior guard Keyshaun Jacobs (Lynn, Mass.) for a huge three-pointer with nine seconds left to put RIC on top by a pair, 79-77.
 
• Fitchburg State turned the ball over on its next possession and Jacobs made both free throws to give RIC a four-point cushion with six seconds left on the clock. Sophomore guard Damian Tucker (Boynton Beach, Fla.) picked up a steal to secure the win for the Anchormen.
 
• Jacobs finished with 15 points, four boards and six assists. Sophomore guard Jordan Riley (Windsor, Conn.) chipped in with eight points, 11 boards and a trio of assists.
 
• Fitchburg State sophomore forward Quincy Taylor (Boston, Mass.) finished with 21 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kerns Monvilus (Coral Springs, Fla.) posted 19 points and nine boards.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 43 percent (32-for-75) from the floor, 21 percent (5-for-24) from three-point range and 67 percent (12-for-18) from the free throw line.
 
• Fitchburg State shot 40 percent (29-for-73) from the field, 19 percent (5-for-26) from downtown and 54 percent (14-for-26) from the charity stripe.
 
• The Falcons led in rebounding, 55-43.
