Last Second Goal Sinks Anchormen vs. Connecticut College

Providence, R.I—Junior forward Luis Blanco (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored in the 66th minute to tie the game, but Connecticut College scored with under a minute left in regulation as the Rhode Island College men's soccer team fell, 2-1, vs. the Camels on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

THE BASICS
Connecticut College 2, Rhode Island College 1
Connecticut College (9-3)
Rhode Island College (8-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Camels got on the board early in the fifth minute thanks to sophomore forward Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Penn.), who powered a shot through RIC senior goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.) for his first of the season. Freshman defender Jorge Mendo (Zaragoza, Spain) started the play with a long throw-in and classmate defender Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) knocked the ball over to Scoffone to put the visitors on top, 1-0

• The score remained 1-0 in Connecticut's favor entering the half, despite both teams having marquee opportunities that hit the post.

• Connecticut College led in shots (5-3) going into the break, while Rhode Island College led in corner kicks (5-1).

• Blanco put two blasts on net from point-blank range in the 61st minute, but CC junior goalkeeper Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) denied both offerings in succession.

• RIC evened up the score when Blanco darted for a loose ball and finally beat Maidenberg to the spot for his club-tying seventh goal of the year.

• Connecticut College peppered Tashjian with shots over the final 10 minutes, making the senior stop four shots over that span.

• With less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation, CC sophomore defender Jordan Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) settled a pass from Scoffone inside the box and scored his first career goal to secure the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
• Tashjian stopped five shots in the loss (8-6).

• Maidenberg had four saves of his own and was credited with his seventh win (7-3).

• Despite the shots being close going into the half, Connecticut College stormed out to a 15-8 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes, giving the Camels a 20-11 shot advantage for the contest. CC also finished with the lead in corner kicks, 7-6.
