HOW IT HAPPENED
• Burgess led off the first with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball, while sophomore second baseman Marissa Cushman (Cranston, RI) reached on a throwing error and eventually stole home, to stake RIC to an early 2-0 lead.
• Freshman left fielder Megan Cooney (Warwick, RI) belted a grand slam for her first career home run to put the Anchorwomen up, 7-0, in the third inning.
• RIC put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning paced by a two-run double by senior first baseman Amber Wainwright (Taunton, MA).
BY THE NUMBERS
• Cooney went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, a homer and five RBI. Wainwright went 2-for-4 with a run scored, one double and two RBI.
• Freshman pitcher Faith Turinese (Plainville, MA) picked up her first collegiate win (1-0), allowing two earned runs on seven hits to go along with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
• Wells freshman pitcher Hailie Bennett (Latham, NY) took the loss (0-1).
