Women's Soccer Suffers, 5-0, Setback Against Wesleyan

Providence, R.I.--Rhode Island College women's soccer senior forward Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, RI) registered a team-best six shots as the Anchorwomen suffered a 5-0 setback against Wesleyan in a non-conference contest played at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wesleyan jumped out to the early lead in the fourth minute when senior midfielder Lauren Goetzman (Hidden Hills, CA) put in a shot from five yards out after a crossing pass from freshman midfielder Andi Wiley (Alameda, CA).

• RIC sophomore midfielder Brooke Young's (West Warwick, RI) shot just over a minute later was tipped over the crossbar by Wesleyan goalkeeper Sarah Hammond (Canton, MI) and the Anchorwomen couldn't convert the ensuing corner kick as Wesleyan held on to the lead.

• Wiley extended the Cardinal's lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute when she blasted in a shot from 15 yards out for her first collegiate goal after a feed from senior defender Meg Harrop (Washington, DC).

• Goetzman's second goal of the game came in the 20th minute as she scored from 10 yards out after a throw-in from junior defender Julia Meehan (Farmington, CT).  

• Senior forward Olivia Capraro (North Providence, RI) was stopped on a breakaway from Hammond at the top of the box in the 35th minute to keep the Anchorwomen off the board.

• Wesleyan took the 3-0 lead heading into halftime, outshooting RIC by an 8-7 margin.

• Goetzman capped off her hat trick for the evening in the 57th minute when she took the ball away from a RIC defender and buried a shot into the corner of the net to put the score at 4-0.

• The Cardinals capped off the scoring with 27:53 left on the clock when freshman Shay Crotty (Alpine, CA) chipped in a shot from two yards out for her first collegiate goal with an assist by junior defender Allie Goss (Glastonbury, CT) to make the score 5-0.

• RIC had one last scoring chance in the final minute, but Hammond was able to stop a shot from DeGrooth from 10 yards out to preserve the shutout.

• Junior goalkeeper Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, RI) made six stops in the loss (4-7-1) for the Anchorwomen.

• Hammond recorded six saves in the victory (2-2) for Wesleyan.

BY THE NUMBERS
• Wesleyan had a 16-11 advantage in shots and also led, 4-2, in corner kicks for the contest.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East action at UMass Boston on Saturday, Oct. 20 (4 p.m.).
