VTSU Castleton Shocks Anchormen

Castleton, Vt.--Freshman guard Noe Bom (Hamburg, Germany) registered 13 points and four rebounds as Rhode Island College was upset by VTSU Castleton, 61-57, at Glenbrook Gym on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams tested each other defensively as the first half, which ended in a low scoring affair, 22-21, with the visitors in the lead.
 
• Freshman guard Kyle Prete (North Providence, R.I.) scored five points for RIC in the opening half to give the visitors a slight edge.
 
• The Spartans caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half as the hosts shot 7-for-12 (58 percent) from long range and gave them life down the stretch.
 
• Bom made a layup with seven seconds left to give the Anchormen a one-point, 57-56, lead.
 
• However, the Spartans rallied at their own place and nailed a trey with three seconds left to pulled, 59-57, and eventually seal the host's first conference win of the season.
 
• Junior forward Xavier Mendez (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at home vs. Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, Feb. 4 (7:30 p.m.).
