Late Penalty Kicks Costs Anchormen vs. Southern Maine

Providence, R.I.--Senior defender Lucas Duquette (Wakefield, R.I.) scored the lone goal for the Anchormen as Rhode Island College battled Southern Maine to a 1-1 tie in Little East action played at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Anchormen struggled to find meaningful chances in the first half until freshman midfielder Julian Orellana (Providence, R.I.) stepped up for a corner kick opportunity and found Duquette's head as RIC took the lead in the 32nd minute.
 
• RIC held the Huskies extremely quiet throughout the first half, denying any shots on target, while USM saw its best scoring chance wiped off the board due to an offsides call.
 
• The second half belonged to the visitors who consistently pressured the Anchormen.
 
• The Huskies had a glorious chance in the 64th minute, which RIC freshman goalkeeper Shane Merklein (Mullica Hill, N.J.) had to make a diving save to his right to keep it a one-goal advantage.
 
• An Anchormen foul in the box led to a USM penalty kick with 48 seconds remaining in the game, which salvaged a tie for the visitors.
 
• Merklein made three saves in the tie (1-0-3).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Salve Regina on Wednesday, Oct. 1 (7 p.m.).
