HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
• It was pitchers' duel in game one as both teams went scoreless through seven innings.
• The bats woke up in the top of the eighth as the Spartans put three on the board with a trio of RBI singles.
• After a sophomore shortstop
Amanda Conti (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled in the bottom of the eighth, junior first baseman
Katelyn Ashe (Colchester, Conn.) blasted an opposite field home run to pull the Anchorwomen within a run.
• CU senior pitcher
Olivia Joy (Greenfield, Mass.) got the final out to preserve the win.
• Kidd was a tough luck loser (8-6) in the game, going the full eight innings and sitting down 12 Spartans on strikes.
GAME TWO
Before game two, RIC took time to honor its three seniors: catcher
Alexis Boyce (Wolcott, Conn.),
Shannon McDonald (Saunderstown, R.I.) and designated player/third baseman
Cassidy Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).
• The Spartans jumped all over RIC in the second inning, plating five in the frame. Kidd was summoned with one down in the second and kept the visitors off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
• RIC was able to take the lead on some defensive miscues by the visitors and took the lead, 7-5, in home half of the third.
• The Anchorwomen then knocked in some insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively, to secure the split.
• Junior center fielder
Avery Katz (Brookfield, Conn.) had a pair of triples in the nightcap and Boyce knocked in a run.
• Kidd picked up the win (9-6) that eluded her in the opener.
