Softball Splits at Western Connecticut

Danbury, Conn.--Junior center fielder Avery Katz (Brookfield, Conn.) went a combined 5-for-6 as Rhode Island College split a doubleheader vs.Western Connecticut in Little East softball action played at Westside Field on Wednesday evening

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
• The Anchorwomen grabbed two runs in the first inning. Katz was able to score off of a failed pick-off attempt and sophomore pitcher Abby Kidd (Granby, Conn.) helped her own case with an RBI single.
 
• After another RIC run in the second gave the visitors a 3-0 lead, the Wolves scored twice over the next few innings to cut the RIC lead down to just one, 3-2.
 
• The Anchorwomen responded, scoring four more times over the remaining innings, to take game one. Junior third baseman Victoria Young (Sterling, Conn.) blasted a solo shot in the sixth.
 
• Kidd earned the win (7-5), striking out eight in a complete game effort.
 
GAME TWO
• Each team plated a run in the third inning.
 
• Fireworks flew in the fifth inning. In the top portion of the stanza, RIC scored five times, with senior designated player Alexis Boyce (Wolcott, Conn.) and freshman second baseman Noelle Simmons (Manchester, N.H.) each collecting two-run hits.
 
• The Wolves one-upped RIC, scoring six in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. The hosts collected seven hits, several of which went for extra bases, to secure a 7-6 victory.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play a doubleheader at home vs. Salem State on Thursday, April 20 (4 p.m.).
