Providence, R.I.—Freshman second baseman
Lucas McElroy (Westport, Mass.) launched a homer as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated Southern Maine, 10-1, in the second game of a Little East doubleheader played at Pontarelli Field on Sunday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Rhode Island College 10, Southern Maine 1
Rhode Island College (11-6, 2-0 LEC)
Southern Maine (2-11, 0-2 LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC was able to capitalize on a bases loaded and no outs scenario in the first inning. Junior right fielder
Sean Helfrich (Saunderstown. R.I.) walked in a run, and a few Huskies mistakes in the field allowed RIC to plate a total of four runs.
• USM senior left fielder
Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine) singled in the first and scored the only run of the day for the visitors in the top of the second. McElroy responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame, which kept RIC's lead at four, 5-1.
• Junior pitcher
Terry Murray (Norfolk, Mass.) was lights out, going six strong and striking out seven. He got some insurance runs in the fourth when freshman first baseman
Daniel Cascio (East Hampton, Conn.) emptied the bases with a pinch-hit three-run double to bury the Huskies.
WHAT'S NEXT
