Corsairs Take Two from Softball

North Dartmouth, Mass.--Sophomore center fielder Avery Katz (Brookfield, Conn.) went 5-for-8 with three runs scored as Rhode Island College dropped a doubleheader (2-1, 15-8) vs. UMass Dartmouth in Little East action played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
• RIC took the lead in the third inning. With runners on first and third, junior third baseman Cassidy Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) laid down a bunt to bring in Katz.
 
• The Corsairs tied the game in the fourth when senior pitcher Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) smacked a solo homer.
 
• UMD took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the seventh when sophomore third baseman Dyonna Rodas (Warwick, R.I.) hit a bases-loaded RBI sacrifice fly.
 
• RIC put the tying run on third with two down in the bottom of the seventh, but Richards got a big strikeout to secure the win.
 
• Richards struck out eight and earned her ninth (9-3) win of the season.
 
• RIC freshman pitcher Abby Kidd (Granby, Conn.) took the loss (3-5).
 
GAME TWO
• The nightcap took two and half hours to complete as the two squads combined for 23 runs and 27 hits.
 
• A six-run fourth inning put the hosts on top, 8-7. Six different Anchorwomen notched an RBI in the frame.
 
• The Corsairs answered with back-to-back four-run innings to complete sweep.
 
• Kataz went 4-for-4 to lead RIC, while Rodas went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
 
• RIC sophomore pitcher Tatiana Burcy (Boston, Mass.) took the loss (3-3).
 
• Freshman reliever Ella Beaulieu (Tyngsborough, Mass.) picked up the win (1-0) for the visitors.
 
 WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at doubleheader at Worcester State on Thursday, April 14 (4 p.m.).
