Jeniyah Jones Leads RIC Past Eastern Connecticut, 71-45

Willimantic, Conn.--Junior guard Jeniyah Jones (Randolph, Mass.) had nine points, a game-high nine rebounds, five assists and two steals as Rhode Island College opened up 2022 with a 71-45 win over Eastern Connecticut in Little East women's basketball action played at Geissler Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A layup by Eastern junior guard Jaclyn Santella (Hebron, Conn.) with just 15 seconds remaining cut the Anchorwomen lead down to just one point, 30-29, at the half.
 
• The Anchorwomen would take a massive advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts, 23-8. RIC would hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest.
 
• Junior guard Maci Dorantes (Bristol, Conn.) racked up a team-high 11 points in just 15 minutes of action off of the bench.
 
• Sophomore guard Ashanti Frazier (Newington, Conn.) dished out a game-high six assists and scored nine points in the winning effort.
 
• ECSU junior forward Mariah Dunn (Meriden, Conn.) was the only Warrior to score in double-digits, finishing with a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 44 percent (29-for-66) from the field, 36 percent (8-for-22) from downtown and 46 percent (5-for-11) from the free throw line.
 
• Eastern Connecticut State shot 30 percent (17-for-57) from the field, eight percent (1-for-13) from behind the three-point arc and 83 percent (10-for-12) from the charity stripe.
 
• RIC has won five straight contests, all of which have been conference games. The Anchorwomen have won four of those games by double-digits.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Emerson on Saturday, Jan. 8 (1 p.m.).
