Caitlin Lopez Earns First Collegiate Win; Wainwright Smacks Grand Slam in, 14-4, Win at Mitchell

New London, Conn.--Freshman pitcher Caitlin Lopez (Cranston, R.I.) earned her first collegiate win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two batters, as the Rhode Island College softball team defeated Mitchell, 14-4, in six innings at the Mitchell College Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Anchorwomen offense got off to a hot start, scoring six runs in the top half of the first inning thanks to a senior first baseman Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass.) grand slam.
 
• RIC pushed across another run in the top of the second, which increased its lead to seven, 7-0.
 
• Another Anchorwoman crossed the plate in the fourth to give RIC an 8-0 advantage.
 
• MC was able to get their first runner in to score in the home half of the fourth inning to cut the RIC lead down to seven, 8-1.
 
• MC cut the RIC lead down to four, 8-4, before another big inning by the Anchorwomen offense. RIC pushed six more runs across the plate to give them a 10-run, 14-4, cushion.
 
• RIC shut down the Mitchell offense in the bottom of the sixth to earn their first victory of the season, via the eight-run rule.
 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Wainwright went 2-for-4 on the day with five RBI and two runs scored.
 
• Sophomore catcher Alexis Boyce (Wolcott, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. 
 
• MC junior shortstop Nene Capeles (Bridgeport, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Southern Maine on Friday, April 2 (2 p.m.).
