Women's Tennis Opens Little East Play With, 8-1, Win Over UMass Boston

Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College sophomore Casey Burns (Westbrook, CT) won at both No. 1 singles and doubles in her season debut to lead the Anchorwomen past UMass Boston, 8-1, in Little East women's tennis action played at the RIC Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Burns and freshman Jenna Lisi (Cranston, RI) defeated UMass Boston senior Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, MA) and freshman Amy Drame (Milwaukee, WI), 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.

• RIC juniors Laurel Ten Eyck (Warwick, RI) and Grace Zangari (Saunderstown, RI) defeated UMB freshman Shelby Parent (Cambridge, MN) and senior Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, WA), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.

• The Anchorwomen completed the doubles sweep when juniors Emily Orticerio (Smithfield, RI) and Hailey Raskob (North Smithfield, RI) combined to defeat UMass Boston sophomore Chloe Gates (Plymouth, MA) and freshman Evangelia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, MA), 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.

• Burns gave RIC a 4-0 lead when she defeated Drame (6-0, 3-0, ret.) at No. 1 singles. Junior Victoria Vittori (New Bedford, MA) clinched the win with a straight set (6-1, 6-1) victory over Tueme at No. 5 singles.

• Lisi won (6-0, 6-2) at No. 2 singles vs. Gauthier and Zangari followed with a (6-0, 6-3) win vs. Vassiliadis at No. 3 singles.

• Raskob made it eight straight wins with a (6-1, 6-2) victory vs. sophomore Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, MA) at No. 4 singles.

• Parent picked up the lone point for the Beacons on the day with a win (6-4, 6-3) vs. RIC freshman Sarah Gonick (Kingston, MA).

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Salve Regina on Monday, Sept. 9 (4 p.m.).
