Colonials Down Women's Volleyball, 3-1

Danbury, Conn.--Junior outside hitter Jenaeya Evans (Marietta, GA) led the way for the Anchorwomen with eight kills and eight digs as the Rhode Island College women's volleyball team fell to Western Connecticut in four sets, 3-1 (18-25, 18-25, 25-20, 16-25), at Feldman Arena on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first set started with both teams exchanging points, neither side was able to build much of a lead. Western Connecticut built a three point lead, 11-8, and gained momentum to close out the set with a seven point win, 25-18.

• During the second set, RIC jumped put to a 9-4 advantage, led by Evans and sophomore defensive specialist Wynter Conlon (East Walpole, MA). The lead did not last long as the Colonials evened the score at 10 apiece. WCSU then used a 15-8 scoring run to close out the set, a take a 2-0 lead.

• The Anchorwomen, who led by as many as 10 points, 18-8, dominated the third set. Junior right side hitter Eden Anthony (Cranston, RI) and senior setter Jacqueline Jutras (Foster, RI) each had a solid frame as RIC captured the set, 25-20, and cut its deficit to 2-1.

• Western Connecticut controlled the fourth set the entire way. RIC nearly tied the score at five apiece, but the Colonials prevailed as they captured the set by nine, 25-16 and won the contest, 3-1.

• RIC senior middle hitter Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, RI) had five kills and two blocks. Junior libero Samantha Borges (Swansea, MA) led the match with 15 digs.

• WCSU junior utility Nicolina Chenard (Ardsley, NY) registered a match-high 16 kills and added eight digs. Junior outside hitter Victoria Korzan (Southbury, CT) posted a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.

BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC hit .106 (27-17-94), while Western Connecticut hit .271 (53-21-118)

• The Colonials held the advantage in both kills, 53-27, and digs, 46-39.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face Sarah Lawrence in its second match of the day at Western Connecticut (2 p.m.).
