Anchorwomen Advance to Morin Memorial Classic Final

Williamstown, Mass.—Junior guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, MA) led the Anchorwomen with a double-double  effort of 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team defeated Westfield State, 86-72, in the first round of the Williams College Morin Memorial Tournament on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team could build much of a lead in the first quarter. The Owls held a five point lead, 20-15, before a layup and ensuing foul shot was converted by RIC freshman forward Kyle Lison (Gardner, MA) to tie the score. The Owls took a slight lead into the second quarter, 26-24.

• Both teams traded buckets for the entire second quarter without being able to build much of a lead. The Anchorwomen went into the halftime break up by a pair, 42-40.

• The Anchorwomen found their groove coming out of the halftime break, outscoring Westfield State in the third quarter, 24-18, to build an eight point lead, 66-58, heading into the final frame.

• RIC kept battling on both ends of the floor during the fourth quarter. The Anchorwomen pushed their lead to double digits, 82-71, after a jumper by senior forward Fataya Larry (Brooklyn, NY) with 2:34 remaining and kept the Owls at a comfortable distance to advance to the finals.

• Larry registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, RI) finished with 14 points.

• Sophomore center Willcia McBorrough (Providence, RI) finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) contributed six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

• WSU junior forward Melissa Gray (Peabody, MA) led the Owls with 19 points and four rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 46 percent (36-for-78) from the field, 35 percent (7-for-20) from three-point range and 78 percent (7-for-9) from the foul line.

• WSU shot 35 percent (26-for-75) from the field, 35 percent (7-for-20) from beyond the arc and 65 percent (13-for-20) from the free throw line.

• RIC held the advantage on the glass, 58-42 and outscored the Owls in the paint, 48-32.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face host Williams in the finals of the Morin Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23 (3 p.m.).
