Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College has named Debbie Johnson ’85 as its head women’s golf coach.
“I’m excited for the opportunity that Rhode Island College and Don Tencher has afforded me,” said Johnson. “I look forward to the challenges ahead and the continuous growth of the women’s golf program.”
Johnson comes to RIC as an accomplished coach in the high school ranks. She was the girls’ basketball coach at Parkview Junior High School for two years and at Cranston High School East for three seasons. She guided the Thunderbolts to three straight Rhode Island Interscholastic League (R.I.I.L.) Championship appearances and the State Title in 1988.
Johnson was a two-year letterwinner for the RIC women’s basketball team, helping the team reach the NCAA tournament in 1985.
She was also an active member of the community, serving as a coach for several CLCF programs throughout the years.
In upcoming action, the women’s golf team opens the 2018-19 season at Westfield State Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 16.
