Norton, Mass.—The Rhode Island College softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Wheaton on Sunday afternoon. Wheaton took the first game, 9-1 (six innings), before completing the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

• In the opener, Wheaton jumped out to the 5-0 advantage after five innings of play.

• Rhode Island College got on the board in the top of the sixth when an RBI single from senior catcher Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) scored junior center fielder Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) to cut the lead to 5-1.

• The Lyons responded in the bottom of the sixth and a walk-off grand slam from freshman first baseman Lindsay Whittles (Hopkinton, MA) ended the game at 9-1.

• Schott was 1-for-2 with and RBI and a walk in the loss for RIC.

• Whittles was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, while freshman baseman Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, NY) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Wheaton.

• Junior pitcher Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) suffered the setback (3-9) in the pitching circle for RIC, giving up nine runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

• Sophomore Jade Assad (Lambertville, NJ) picked up the win for Wheaton, allowing one run on four hits in six innings.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

• In the nightcap, Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the second, which included an RBI single from junior center fielder Lily Ongkiko (Joliet, IL), to jump out to the early 4-0 advantage.

• The visiting Anchorwomen got on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from senior shortstop Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) to make the score 4-1.

• That would be all the scoring for the contest, however, as Wheaton held on for the 4-1 victory.

• Venturini was 1-for-4 with an RBI in the loss for RIC.

• Ongkiko paced Wheaton, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Assad went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Lyons.

• Junior pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) took the loss (4-8) for RIC, allowing four runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work.

• Junior Shelby Wilson (Peabody, MA) recorded the victory for Wheaton, allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.
