Duclos and Cunha Lead RIC in Split With Worcester State

Providence, R.I.—Sophomore right fielder Sydney Duclos (North Providence, R.I.) went a combined 3-for-5 with four RBI, a pair of doubles and a run scored as Rhode Island College split a doubleheader with Worcester State at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Thursday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Rhode Island College 11, 2; Worcester State 5, 3
Rhode Island College (15-12-1)
Worcester State (11-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
• Although a pair of runs in the first gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead, the Anchorwomen ripped off six in their at-bat thanks to a two-run homer by fifth-year third baseman Victoria Young (Sterling, Conn.) and a two-run double from Duclos.

• Sophomore catcher Brianna Bailey (Windsor, Conn.) drove in a run in the fourth frame and Duclos once again smacked a two-run double as the RIC lead ballooned to seven, 9-2.

• Worcester State crept back in the fifth and sixth with three runs to pull within four, 9-5.

• The Anchorwomen brought in a pair of insurance runs during the bottom of the sixth as sophomore designated player Gabrielle Sweeney (Shirley, Mass.) stole home and senior left fielder Abby Clesas (Johnston, R.I.) notched an RBI single.

• Junior pitcher Gabby Cunha (Cranston, R.I.) recorded her first win (1-2) with a seven-strikeout performance.

GAME TWO
• Young started the second game with an RBI double to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.

• The Lancers answered and tied the game in the third with an RBI double of their own.

• Freshman first baseman Jillian Guilfoyle (Derby, Conn.) would give the hosts the lead with an RBI single in the third stanza.

• RIC lived dangerously in the fourth through sixth innings as Worcester loaded the bases twice and had runners in scoring position in each of those frames, but were unable to plate any runs.

• After back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh, WSU scored on a throwing error to tie the game and scored what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single.

• Senior pitcher Abby Kidd (Granby, Conn.) struck out eight in the loss (7-6).
