Noelle Simmons (Manchester, N.H.) collected her first collegiate hit as the Rhode Island College softball team fell vs. Denison, 8-0, at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic to open the 2023 season on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Big Red scored in the first inning and again via solo home runs in the third and fifth. In the fifth inning, RIC freshman pitcher
Gabby Cunha (Cranston, R.I.) came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs. She was able to get out of the jam and keep the game steady at a 3-0 deficit.

• Denison sophomore third baseman
Jacqui Abogado (Naperville, Ill.), who had a solo shot in the third inning, went yard again, this time bringing in two runs to elevate the Big Red lead to 5-0.

• DU was able to crank another homer to cap the contest's scoring in the top of the seventh.

• Simmons and senior first baseman
Cassidy Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) picked up the only two hits for the Anchorwomen.

Abby Kidd (Granby, Conn.) was saddled with the loss (1-0).

• Denison freshman pitcher
Brooke Surbaugh (San Bruno, Calif.) hurled a complete-game shutout in her collegiate debut, striking out eight in the win (1-0).
