2021-22 Rhode Island College Wrestling Season Summary

Providence, R.I.—Head Coach Jay Jones (Career record: 250-220-1; .532) finished the regular season with one wrestler winning the individual national title at the 2022 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championship, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 11-12. RIC tied for 23rd (30 teams) with a team score of 20.0 at the tournament.
 
The Anchormen finished 14th (19 teams) with a team score of 41.5 at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship, hosted by Springfield on Feb. 26-27.
 
Rhode Island College finished 13th (15 teams) with a 2-2 record at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Headlock Hunger Dual Championship, hosted by Johnson and Wales on Jan. 23.
 
The Anchormen went 8-12 in dual action on the season.
 
Senior Ricky Brown (North Kingstown, R.I.) wrapped up his career with a 36-39 record to go along with 21 pins, 39 takedowns, 11 reversals, 52 escapes and two near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2021-22, Brown was 13-13 at 285 lbs. with 10 pins, 17 takedowns, eight reversals and 15 escapes.
 
As a sophomore in 2019-20, Brown was 14-12 at 285 lbs. with 17 takedowns, two reversals, 22 escapes and five pins.
 
As a freshman in 2017-18, Brown was 9-14 at 285 lbs. with five takedowns, one reversal, 15 escapes and six pins.
 
He is a secondary education major with a concentration in history and a 2017 graduate of North Kingstown High School.
 
Senior Travis Manick (Methuen, Mass.) closed out his RIC career with a 34-23 overall record to go along with 16 pins, 59 takedowns, five reversals, 37 escapes and seven near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2021-22, Manick was 7-4 at 285 lbs. with two pins, 21 takedowns, five escapes and five near-falls. He finished fourth at 285 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
As a sophomore in 2019-20, Manick was 7-11 at 285 lbs. with 14 takedowns, two reversals, 19 escapes, one near-fall and four pins.
 
As a freshman in 2018-19, Manick was an Honorable Mention to the All-NEWA Team at 197 lbs. and a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American. He was 20-8 at 197 lbs. with 24 takedowns, three reversals, 13 escapes, 10 pins and one near-fall.
 
He is a biology major and a 2018 graduate of Methuen High School.
 
Senior Daniel Sblendorio (Mountainside, N.J.) closed out his RIC career with a 31-17 overall record to go along with 14 pins, 52 takedowns, five reversals, 37 escapes and nine near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2021-22, Sblendorio was 5-2 at 197 lbs. with four pins, 10 takedowns, six escapes and five near-falls.
 
During the 2020-21 Covid-shortened season, Sblendorio went 2-1 with one pin, four takedowns and four escapes.
 
As a junior in 2019-20, Sblendorio earned All-Region honors at 197 lbs. with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship. He was also an Honorable Mention to the All-NEWA Team at 197 lbs. He was 24-14 with 38 takedowns, five reversals, 27 escapes, four near-falls and nine pins.
 
Sblendorio is a psychology major and a 2015 graduate of St. Peter's Prep.
 
Junior Michael Burns (North Attleboro, Mass.) was 8-10 at 157 lbs. with two pins, 23 takedowns, three reversals, 20 escapes and four near-falls.
 
Junior Nathan Lackman (Wernersville, Penn.) was the NCAA Div. III National Champion at 157 lbs. and earned All-American honors at the NCAA National Championship. He joined Mike Bonora '07 (2008) and Billy Cotter '96 (1994) as the only other Anchormen in program history to win a national title. The No. 3-seeded Lackman went a perfect 4-0 at the National Championship. He scored a takedown 37 seconds into sudden victory to defeat No. 1-seeded Kaidon Watters from RIT, 5-3, in the finals to claim the title.
 
He was also named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Lackman earned All-Region honors by going 5-0 at 157 lbs. at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship. He was named the NEWA Wrestler of the Year and First Team All-NEWA at 157 lbs.
 
He went 35-0 at 157 lbs. with 11 pins, 74 takedowns, two reversals, 15 escapes and 29 near-falls. Remarkably, he was not taken down the entire season. Lackman was named to the NEWA Dual Championship All-Tournament Team. He was the individual champion at 157 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
Junior Jett Tancsik (Centereach, N.Y.) was 11-6 at 184 lbs. with two pins, 28 takedowns, 15 escapes and four near-falls. He finished second at 184 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
Junior Eric Zane (Quaker Hill, Conn.) was 9-12 at 165 lbs. with one pin, 33 takedowns, four reversals, 13 escapes and four near-falls.
 
Sophomore Daniel Brown (Pascoag, R.I.) was 1-6 at 165 lbs. with two takedowns, one reversal, and one escape.
 
Sophomore Rogelio Gonzalez (Woonsocket, R.I.) was 6-17 at 174 lbs. with two pins, 17 takedowns, six reversals, 42 escapes and three near-falls.
 
Sophomore Edison Guarcas (Providence, R.I.) was 7-3 at 285 lbs. with two pins, 11 takedowns, four reversals and three escapes.
 
Sophomore Christopher McCarthy (Belford, N.J.) was 8-14 at 174 lbs. with one pin, 19 takedowns, two reversals, 28 escapes and four near-falls.
 
Freshman Michael Alfonso (Garfield, N.J.)  was 14-5 at 285 lbs. with 10 pins, 17 takedowns, four reversals, six escapes and three near-falls. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
 
Freshman Kwesi Amoa (Central Islip, N.Y.) was 11-12 at 125 lbs. with one pin, 24 takedowns, five reversals, eight escapes and 11 near-falls. Amoa finished second at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
Freshman Parris Cooper (Providence, R.I.) was 5-5 at 141 lbs. with 15 takedowns and six escapes.
 
Freshman Jaden Grigsby (Providence, R.I.) was 4-8 at 174 lbs. with three pins, eight takedowns, three reversals, 17 escapes and five near-falls.
 
Freshman Fred Luchs (Belford, N.J.) earned All-Region honors at 125 lbs. with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship. He was 21-8 at 125 lbs. with 12 pins, 34 takedowns, five reversals, 12 escapes and 16 near-falls. Luchs was the individual champion at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
Freshman Hunter Lundberg (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) was 5-16 at 133 lbs. with one pin, 27 takedowns, two reversals, 25 escapes and one near-fall.
 
Freshman Michael Pestana (North Bergen, N.J.) was 7-20 at 149 lbs. with two pins, 18 takedowns, nine reversals, 30 escapes and 12 near-falls.
 
Freshman Reilly Sullivan (South Windsor, Conn.) went 1-7 at 174 lbs. with one pin, two takedowns, three reversals and three escapes.
