Providence, R.I.—As part of RIC's 100th Anniversary of Athletics celebration, the athletic department is excited to announce that 1968 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist

Smith and fellow U.S. athlete
John Carlos famously rose their hands in black gloves during the medal presentation and accompanying National Anthem at the Mexico City Olympics to show solidarity with oppressed black people worldwide. From that moment, the two athletes faced repercussions, but also gained respect.
Smith will speak in the main auditorium in Roberts Hall at 7 p.m. Following his presentation, he will join RIC President
Dr. Jack Warner for a question and answer period on stage.
The event is free to the public. Please contact the RIC Athletic Department at (401) 456-8007 for additional information.
In addition, a film documenting Smith's life will be shown in Gaige Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 18 (7 p.m.). That event is also free of charge and open to the public.
