Sarah Gonick (Kingston, Mass.) took home a victory at No. 4 singles as the Rhode Island College women's tennis team was defeated by UMass Boston, 5-2, in the finals of the 2022 Little East Championship, played at the BC High Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC came into the match having only one doubles setback for the entire season. The Beacons shocked the Anchorwomen by sweeping all three contests in pairs action.

Jenna Lisi (Cranston, R.I.) and junior
Lauren Macera (Cranston, R.I.) lost a tough, 8-6, battle at No. 1 doubles.

• Lisi bounced back and won in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1 singles.

• Gonick claimed a straight set (6-1, 6-3) victory at No. 4 singles for the Anchorwomen's only other point.

• With the Beacons leading by two, 4-2, UMB junior
Lydia Chan (Quincy, Mass.) defeated Macera at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-0) to capture the title for the Beacons, their first in 27 years.

• RIC had won the previous five tournament championships.

• The Beacons downed RIC, 5-4, on Oct. 15 to claim the No. 1 seed and the homecourt advantage throughout the tournament.
