Emory Ends Anchorwomen's Run in NCAA Championship

Host Eagles Knock Off RIC, 5-0, in Second Round Action

Peachtree Crossing, Ga.—Host Emory defeated Rhode Island College, 5-0, in second round action of the 2021 NCAA Div. III Women's Tennis Championship at Lifetime Fitness on Saturday afternoon to end the Anchorwomen's 2020-21 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Emory freshman Ana Cristina Perez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and junior Lauren Yoon (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated RIC freshman Anna Vygoder (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Sarah Gonick (Kingston, Mass.), 8-0, at No. 3 doubles to start the match.
 
• Eagles senior Stephanie Taylor (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Christina Watson (Houston, Texas) downed RIC seniors Hailey Raskob (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Serena Bobola (Cranston, R.I.), 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
 
• Emory seniors Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico (Pinecrest, Fla.) and Katie Chang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) downed RIC sophomore Jenna Lisi (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Grace Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.), 8-1, at No. 1 doubles to send the hosts into singles matches up by three, 3-0.
 
• Emory junior Jessica Fatemi (Potomac, Md.) defeated RIC freshman Jaimi Vaillancourt (Tiverton, R.I.) (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 singles.
 
• Cristina Perez clinched the win with a (6-0, 6-1) win over RIC freshman Lauren Macera (Cranston, R.I.) at No. 4 singles.
 
• Gonzalez-Rico was leading Lisi (6-1, 3-0) at No. 1 singles.
 
• Watson was leading Zangari (6-1, 4-0) at No. 2 singles.
 
• Taylor was leading Raskob (6-0, 3-0) at No. 3 singles.
 
• Emory senior Defne Olcay (Istanbul, Turkey) was leading Bobola (6-0, 3-1) at No. 5 singles.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• The Anchorwomen won their first round matchup, 5-0, vs. Farmingdale State on May 14. It was the third time in the past four seasons that RIC has won in the NCAA Div. III Championship First Round.
 
• RIC captured the 2020-21 Little East Regular Season and Tournament Championships.
