Alexis Boyce Leads Softball in Split at Keene State

Keene, N.H.--Sophomore catcher Alexis Boyce (Wolcott, Conn.) went 6-for-8 with two runs scored, two doubles and three RBI as Rhode Island College split a doubleheader in Little East softball action played at the Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
• RIC was first to score in game one as Boyce hit a single to center field and then was driven in by a sophomore shortstop Cassidy Schoen (Hopewell Junction, NY) double to center field in the ensuing at-bat.
 
•The hosts knotted the score in the bottom of the second on a sophomore shortstop Sara Cote (Lisbon, Conn.) RBI single to left field that knocked in freshman first basemen Megan Blanchette (Hopkinton, N.H.). The Owls then took the lead, 2-1,  on a junior left fielder Kylie Frank (Acton, Mass.) single through the left side .
 
• The Anchorwomen managed to tie the score at two apiece in the top of the fourth frame on another Schoen single to center field that allowed Boyce to cross the plate.
 
• KSC exploded for four runs in the home half of the fourth to take a five-run, 7-2, lead, highlighted by a Blanchette home run to left field.
 
• The Anchorwomen responded with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the fifth as freshman designated player Katelyn Ashe (Colchester, Conn.) homered (2) to left field to make the score, 7-4.
 
• The Owls scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
• RIC freshman pitcher Caitlin Lopez (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss (4-6).
 
• KSC senior pitcher Alexis Blanchette (Hopkinson, N.H.) threw a complete game in the victory (3-6).  
 
Game Two:
• Frank doubled in the bottom of the fourth and eventually scored on a passed ball to stake the Owls to a 1-0 lead.
 
• RIC put four on the board in the fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from freshman center fielder Avery Katz (Brookfield, Conn.) and sophomore right fielder Faith Turinese (Plainville, Mass.) and a two-run double by Boyce.
 
• Boyce and junior third baseman Katrina Kazen (Warwick, R.I.) registered RBI singles in the seventh to give RIC a 6-1 lead.
 
• The Owls got two back in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore shortstop Sara Cote (Lisbon, Conn.) knocked in a pair with a double.
 
• RIC freshman starter Tatiana Burcy (Boston, Mass.) picked up her third win (3-6), allowing just two earned runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts, in a complete game effort.
 
• KSC sophomore starter Olivia Albert (Old Town, Maine) took the loss (2-10).
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Ashe went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, a homer and two RBI. Turinese went 2-for-6 with three runs scored, a double and one RBI.
 
• Cote went 4-for-7 with a run scored, one double and three RBI for the hosts.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East action with a doubleheader at UMass Boston on Tuesday, May 4 (3:30 p.m.).
