Anchorwomen Hold Off Corsairs, 61-56

Providence, R.I.--Senior guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, Mass.) led the way for the Anchorwomen with 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 61-56, in Little East action played at The Murray Center on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Anchorwomen got off to a slow start as the Corsairs controlled the lead and took a 19-14 advantage at the end of the quarter.
 
• The Anchorwomen shot only 31 percent (6-for-19) over the first 10 minutes and were only able knock down one three-pointer.
 
• As the second quarter began, the Anchorwomen went on a 7-0 run to take the lead by two, 21-19. Though the Anchorwomen outscored the Corsairs in the second frame, both squads went into the halftime intermission knotted at 32.
 
• Senior guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, R.I.) led the Anchorwomen with eight points to go along with two rebounds and one assist in the first half.
 
• A quick 6-0 run gave the Anchorwomen a 41-35 lead to begin the second half.
 
• A three-pointer by sophomore forward Izabelle Booth (Newport, R.I.) again put the Anchorwomen ahead by six points, 46-40, with 1:05 left in the third quarter.  The Anchorwomen had a four-point advantage, 46-42, lead after three quarters.
 
• Young gave the Anchorwomen their largest lead of seven, 54-47, on a jumper with 7:17 left to go in the final frame.
 
• Foul trouble struck the Anchorwomen as they saw two of their veteran ball handlers foul out of the contest with under five minutes left in the game. 
 
• Down the stretch, the Corsairs trimmed the Anchorwomen lead down to three, 59-56, with a chance to tie the game following a turnover, but failed to take advantage.
 
• The Anchorwomen, however, gave the Corsairs hope, as they turned the ball over yet again and saw the visitors miss a three-point jump shot with under a minute left in regulation.
 
• Sophomore forward Maci Dorantes (Bristol, Conn.) came down with a huge defensive rebound with 11 seconds remaining after a pair of missed layups by the Corsairs.
 
• Freshman guard Ashanti Frazier (Newington, Conn.) hit a pair of clutch free throws with seven seconds remaining to put the hosts ahead by five, 61-56, which sealed the fourth victory of the season for the Anchorwomen.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Young finished the night with 12 points to go along with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Booth ended with nine points, seven rebounds and one assist.
 
• Dorantes contributed eight points and three rebounds. Junior center Willcia McBorrough (Providence, R.I.) chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds and a pair of rejections.
 
• UMD junior forward Shaelyn Carriero (Fall River, Mass.) compiled a team-high 12 points to go with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Junior guard Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.) registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
• RIC shot 33 percent (24-for-72) from the field, 19 percent (6-for-31) from three-point territory and 70 percent (7-for-10) from the foul line.
 
• UMD shot 31 percent (18-for-59) from the field, eight percent (1-for-13) from downtown and 66 percent (19-for-29) from the charity stripe.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at home vs. Plymouth State on Saturday, Feb. 13 (noon).
