Women's Basketball Wins, 68-59, at Southern Maine

Gorham, Maine--Senior guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) led the way for the Anchorwomen with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team defeated Southern Maine, 68-59, in Little East action at Hill Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Anchorwomen fell behind 7-0 in the first 5:25 before a sophomore center Willcia McBorrough (Providence, RI) lay-up got the lid off of the basket for the visitors.

• The Anchorwomen did not find their grove offensively as the Huskies climbed out to a 10-point, 18-8, led after the first quarter.

• Tough defense from the Anchorwomen caused multiple turnovers, which helped cut the Huskies lead. The Anchorwomen held the Huskies scoreless in the final 6:26 of the second quarter and scored 13 points to take a two-point lead, 29-27, at the end of the first half.

• The third quarter featured a lot of defense from both teams. RIC held the lead for the entirety of the quarter and held a five-point, 41-36, advantage at the end of the frame.  

• USM came within two points, 43-41, in the fourth quarter, but the Anchorwomen stood strong to capture their fourth league win of the year.

• McBorrough had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Junior guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, MA) scored a team-high 14 points to go with five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Freshman guard Maci Dorantes (Bristol, CT) added a career-high 13 points and six boards off of the bench.

• USM sophomore guard Victoria Harris (Altus, OK) led all scorers with 16 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals for.

BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 37 percent (23-for-62) from the field, 20 percent (4-for-20) from three-point land and 68 percent (18-for-27) from the foul line.

• USM shot 30 percent (18-for-61) from the field, 27 percent (3-for-11) from three-point territory and 77 percent (20-for-26) from the foul line.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at Western Connecticut on Thursday, Jan. 9 (5:30 p.m.).
