Sophia Guerrier Leads RIC Past Castleton, 68-49

Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College junior guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, MA) had 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while sophomore center Willcia McBorrough (Providence, RI) posted a double-double, as the Anchorwomen defeated Castleton, 68-49, in Little East women's basketball action played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• McBorrough posted a double with 11 points, a game-high 14 rebounds and picked up three blocks. Junior guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, RI) finished with 12 points, three boards and three assists. Senior forward Fataya Larry (Brooklyn, NY) posted 12 points and seven boards.

• Castleton senior forward Emilee Bose (Enosburg Falls, VT) led all scorers with 16 points. Junior guard Brooks Raiche (Ira, VT) finished with 11 points.

• The Anchorwomen raced out to a 16-5 lead over the first seven minutes of the first quarter. McBorrough had four points during the run.

• The Spartans capitalized on several RIC turnovers and ripped off a 13-0 run to secure an 18-16 lead at the end of the frame. Raiche had five points, a steal, block and an assist in the run. 

• Raiche made a layup and freshman guard Elisa Magro (Rutland, VT) knocked down a three as the visitors built their largest lead of the first half, 23-18, at 9:12 of the second stanza.

• The Anchorwomen hung close and tied the game, 27-27, on a sophomore guard Maire Gallagher (Worcester, MA) three-pointer at 4:50. A free throw by Guerrier gave the Anchorwomen a seven-point, 37-30, advantage, while Castleton senior guard Alexis Quenneville (Orwell, VT) sank and trey in the closing minute, to send RIC into halftime up by six, 39-33.

• RIC shot 56 percent (15-for-27) from the field in the first half and outrebounded CU, 20-10. 

• Rhode Island College pulled away in the third quarter, going on a 15-5 run over the first eight minutes of the stanza. The Spartans managed just three points over the final six minutes of the quarter as the hosts led by 13, 54-41, with one frame left to play.

• The Anchorwomen outscored the Spartans, 14-8, in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 47 percent (27-for-58) from the field, 21 percent (4-for-19) from three-point range and 53 percent (10-for-19) from the charity stripe.

• Castleton shot 30 percent (17-for-56) from the field, 43 percent (6-for-14) from long range and 69 percent (9-for-13) from the free throw line. 

• RIC dominated the glass, 46-29.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at Southern Maine on Tuesday, Jan. 7 (5:30 p.m.).
