Women's Basketball Suffers, 52-48, Setback Against Eastern Connecticut

Willimantic, Conn.—Sophomore guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, MA) racked up 12 points, five rebounds and three steals as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team suffered a 52-48 setback at Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC junior guard Ornela Livramento (Pawtucket, RI) recorded 12 points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Willcia McBorrough (Providence, RI) had four points and a team-best seven boards.

• Junior guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) tallied eight points, four rebounds and three assists in the loss for the Anchorwomen.

• Freshman forward Anna Barry (Andover, CT) paced Eastern Connecticut with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Mya Villard (Cromwell, CT) added 13 points and nine boards in the win for the Warriors.

• RIC took an 8-3 lead on a layup from Livramento with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter with the visitors holding a 10-8 advantage after the opening stanza.

• The Anchorwomen took their first double-digit advantage of the contest when a layup from Young put the score at, 22-12, with 3:52 left in the first half. RIC led by as many as 14 points in the stanza before taking a 28-20 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

• Eastern Connecticut climbed back and knotted the game, 28-28, on a jumper from Barry with 6:30 left in the third quarter. The two teams then traded baskets with RIC holding a three-point, 37-34, lead after three quarters of play.

• RIC secured a 44-39 lead after a layup from Livramento with 6:07 left in the contest.

• The host Warriors took their first lead of the fourth quarter, 45-44, on a jumper from Villard with 4:47 on the clock.

• ECSU held a 50-48 lead with :25 remaining when the Anchorwomen forced a turnover. RIC couldn't convert on the ensuing possession and the Warriors hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the league victory.  


BY THE NUMBERS
• RIC shot 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the field, 0.0 percent (0-for-16) from three-point range and 22.2 percent (2-for-9) from the free throw line.

• Eastern Connecticut shot 41.7 percent (20-for-48) from the field, 40.0 percent (2-for-5) from the three-point line and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the free throw line.

• RIC outrebounded ECSU by a slight, 40-37, margin.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Plymouth State in a Little East Conference contest on Wednesday, Jan. 23 (5:30 p.m.).
