Alexander & Sampalis Qualify for NEISDA Championships at Blue Jay Pentathlon

West Hartford, Conn.--Freshmen Wenona Alexander (Warwick, RI) and Athena Sampalis (West Greenwich, RI) led the way for the Rhode Island College women's swimming team as the Anchorwomen competed at the University of Saint Joseph's Blue Jay Pentathlon Invitational on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
There were four teams competing at the event with no team scoring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Alexander qualified for the 2019 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship in the 100-yard Individual medley, the 100-yard backstroke, the 100-yard fly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Alexander placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.17), the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.88) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.54).

• She also placed sixth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.05) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:10.99). She also swam the second leg of the fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:57.56) and had the third leg of the second place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:44.79).

• Sampalis qualified for the NEISDA Championship with a ninth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.32). She also notched a 16th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.71), finished 23rd in the 100-yard individual medley (1:20.73) and had a 25th place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:20.04).

• She swam the lead leg of both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:57.56) and the lead leg of the second place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:44.79).

• Senior Madison Lane (Barrington, RI) recorded a 24th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:31.48), finished 30th in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:48.65) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:23.75) and was 36th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:15.52).

• Junior Emily Butterfield (Cranston, RI) placed 25th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:33.73), 28th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:46.50) and recorded a 35th place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:29.56). She also swam the third leg of the fourth place 200-yard freestyle (1:57.56) 

• Freshman Mary McBride (Rumford, RI) was 27th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:44.31), 30th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:11.63), 34th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:29.24) and had the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.56) that notched a fourth place finish.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at UMass Dartmouth's Louise Goodrum Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 3 (Noon).
