Providence, R.I.—Rhode Island College has named John Altieri as an assistant wrestling coach. He will join Head Coach Jay Jones and fellow Assistant Coach Jonathan Murray in guiding the RIC grapplers in 2018-19.
“I would like to thank coach Jones and the athletic staff for this opportunity,” Altieri said. “I am looking forward to working with the team and the bright future of this wrestling program”
“We are so proud to have John become part of our program,” Jones said. “He has an excellent reputation in our home state as a four-time high school champion, which will help us in recruiting. He also gained valuable experience at a small Iowa college, so he will bring that “Iowa style” mentality to the practice room. He will be responsible for the development of our student-athletes.”
Altieri was a two-time NAIA National Qualifier, a Regional Champion and a three-time regional place finisher during his wrestling career at William Penn University.
He was a four-time Rhode Island State Champion and a three-time New England place finisher while at Warwick’s Veterans High School. He is also one of two recipients of the Rhode Island Legend Award.
He is a 2018 graduate of William Penn University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreational management. He also minored in business.
Rhode Island College opens the 2018-19 season at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3.
