Duclos Powers Anchorwomen to LEC Twinbill Sweep vs. WestConn

Providence, R.I.—Junior right fielder Sydney Duclos (North Providence, R.I.) went a combined 5-for-6 with three runs scored, two triples and five RBI as Rhode Island College swept Western Connecticut in a Little East twinbill played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
• The Wolves were the first to score as a home run helped them build a 3-0 lead until RIC tied it up in the bottom half of the second on back-to-back triples by Duclos and senior second baseman Noelle Simmons (Goffstown, N.H.).
 
• Simmons knocked in one of three Anchorwomen runs in the fourth stanza, 6-3, but a two-run blast in the fifth frame from the visitors gave WestConn a one-run lead, 7-6.
 
• Junior pinch hitter Olivia Brett (Sewell, N.J.) tied the game with an RBI single and Duclos got the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the fifth.

• Senior pitcher Gabby Cunha (Cranston, R.I.) hurled 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit to secure the come-from-behind victory.
 
GAME TWO
• The Anchorwomen made quick work of the Wolves through the opening two innings, putting up eight runs, with sophomore shortstop Joey Meyer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) accounting for four of them.
 
• A home run in the fourth stanza by junior left fielder Melanie Earley (Lumberton, N.J.) was one of three runs for RIC, which helped end the game in five innings.
 
• Cunha earned the win (5-4) as she went the complete game with three strikeouts. For the day, she allowed just one run on four hits.
 
• Simmons went 4-for-6 with four runs scored, two triples and three RBI on the day.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East action with a doubleheader at VTSU Castleton on Saturday, April 18 (2 p.m.).
