Richard A. “Dick” Ernst (posthumously) was a legendary men’s and women’s tennis coach at Rhode Island College who won a combined eight Little East Championships and mentored many All-Conference student-athletes. He led the women’s tennis program to four Little East Conference titles (1994, 1995, 1999, 2001) and guided the men’s program to four straight LEC championships from 1992-95.

Ernst led the women’s program for 12 seasons from 1989-01, compiling a 90-54-2 overall record. He guided the men’s program for 11 campaigns from 1991-01, building a 77-53 career mark.

A longtime educator, interscholastic coach and accomplished tennis player, Ernst was inducted into the City of Cranston Hall of Fame, the Cranston Athletic Hall of Fame, the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame, the R.I. Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame, the R.I. Interscholastic League Hall of Fame, the USTA New England Tennis Hall of Fame and the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
